Urban Expositions to Launch L.A. Gift Show in Anaheim in 2013

Atlanta - Urban Expositions will launch a new show in the Southern California marketplace in 2013. The L.A. Gift Show, a new, semi-annual exhibition, will debut at the Anaheim Convention Center, February 2-5, 2013. The show is intended to address the needs of retailers throughout southern California and surrounding areas.
When asked by (Home Accents Today sister publication) Gifts and Decorative Accessories why Urban felt it necessary to launch a new show in a marketplace that has become quite fragmented, Doug Miller, president of Urban Expositions responded, "We felt the timing and market conditions were right to launch a new show in a new location for Southern California. Over the years the current market environment has become increasingly fragmented and diminished, forcing much of the region's substantial retail base to look elsewhere for their buying needs.
"We are launching this show precisely because the market is fragmented. A number of the region's reps and manufacturers have been asking us to bring stability back to this marketplace, as we've done with some of the other western region shows we've acquired, including the San Francisco International Gift Fair and Seattle Gift Show. We see a definite need and opportunity for a strong, unified Southern California gift trade show. We plan to build a vibrant show from the ground up that is custom-tailored to the specialized needs of this fashion-forward, trend-driven marketplace."
As to the timing of the new show being scheduled so close to other nearby shows, Miller responded, "We had a limited number of choices for a winter 2013 launch based on availability at the Anaheim Convention Center and knew there were certain shows we had to avoid - specifically Atlanta and our own West Coast shows in San Francisco and Seattle. Many of the West Coast buyers do travel to multiple regional events, so we wanted to make sure our dates still gave them that option. ... Our show starts the day after the 5-day Las Vegas show ends so we felt that was a manageable option."
Urban Expositions anticipates the first edition of The L.A. Gift Show to open with an exhibitor base representing more than 2,000 domestic and international lines featured in five balanced product categories suited to the West Coast retail audience: Design LA, Gifts & Home, Handcrafted, Cash & Carry and The Market. The market will accommodate retailers' immediate needs with a blend of global style and fashion resources available for immediate delivery or order-writing.
The new launch is part of the continued western region growth strategy for Atlanta-based Urban Expositions. Overseeing and directing the launch of The L.A. Gift Show will be industry veteran Joan Ulrich, who was recently named vice president of new business development for Urban Expositions. Ulrich has a broad understanding of the challenges and opportunities of the Southern California marketplace in particular, and the gift industry as a whole. She will direct a seasoned team of Urban show management and sales executives, including Jim Walker, David Gilfoyle, Elisabeth Sherrer and Dirk von Gal, to market the show to both exhibitors and buyers.
