Industry unites to help earthquake victims

Kalalou, Howard Elliott, Nourison making donations

Jenny Heinzen York -- Home Accents Today, 1/19/2010 8:21:00 AM

Several home accents vendors are working to provide relief to earthquake victims in Haiti, including Kalalou, Howard Elliott and Nourison.

Howard Elliott exec spearheading relief efforts
Jean Joseph, president of the CTC division of Howard Elliott, is a Haitian citizen and the child of Haitian missionaries. As such, he and his family are keenly aware of how best to put limited resources to work in the ravaged country.

"My goal is to start to push people to get involved," he said. "It's out of hand, the situation there, but there are only a few organizations right now that have the ability to help."

Joseph and Howard Elliott are encouraging people to donate to Missionary Flights International, an operation that flies supplies into Haiti out of West Palm Beach, Fla. The group is soliciting monetary and supply donations at this time. To see a list of needs and drop-off options, click here. Joseph said the Red Cross is also a good choice because of the infrastructure they have in Haiti already.

Kalalou to send 200 care packages
Doug and Susan Williams, owners of Kalalou, have created “care packages” to help with earthquake recovery.

Each package includes a variety of necessities, from food to cookware to candles to soap to tools to personal care items, and much more.

Each package costs about $100. The Williams are soliciting donations to help defray the cost of putting the packages together and shipping them to Haiti as soon as the ports are open.

To donate, send a check to Doug and Susan’s Kids Foundation, C/O Haiti Care Package, 3844 West Northside Drive, Jackson, Miss.  39209. Or go to www.kalalou.com, click Doug and Susan's Kids Foundation, then click Sister Clara's Clinic/Haiti, then click 'donate' under the photo. Donations are tax deductible.

Nourison employees make donations

The day after the earthquake in Haiti, Nourison employees at the company’s Saddle Brook, N.J., headquarters set up a donation fund to benefit American Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders.  By the end of last week, nearly everyone at the company had pledged to donate, and the Peykar family has offered to make a matching gift to these organizations.
