Alonzia Pettman, left, spokeswoman for the women of Gee’s Bend, with Kathy Ireland and several of the quilters themselves.

Kathy Ireland Home is launching collections here inspired by its partnership with Tinwood Ventures and the artistry of the Quilts of Gee’s Bend. The collection includes area rugs, case goods, home office, lighting, decorative accessories, soft goods, candles and permanent botanicals. Ireland discovered the quilts of Gee’s Bend through her longtime friend, Chef Andre of ACafe, a KIWW Specialty Brand. Produced since the 1920s , these remarkable quilts are designed and hand-sewn by women in the rural community of Gee’s Bend, Ala. Ireland and many of the artists from Gee’s Bend are on hand during the show  to celebrate these new collections at the Kathy Ireland Home by Standard showroom in the World Market Center space 953, Kathy Ireland Home by Martin in space 1025, Kathy Ireland Home by Hanna’s Candle Company in space C-6919, and the Kathy Ireland Home by Labs showroom in the Pavilions space 5910. As seven women from Gee’s Bend listened, their spokeswoman Alonzia Pettway talked about the designs the group creates. “You think about the pattern when you lie down at night,” she said. “You have the pattern in your head and in your mind, then you get it in your heart. When it goes to your heart, you make the quilt.” Pettway, who has been quilting since she was 13 years old, said she is very proud and happy about the recognition Gee’s Bend quilts have received. “I never dreamed one of my quilts would end up in a museum.” “It’s a great honor to launch this beautiful collection which celebrates the amazing talents of a small, women’s quilting collective,” Ireland said. “There is true genius in their design. They are wonderful and gracious in teaching us how to get the product right.”
