After taking in the fabulously forward-thinking designs on display at ICFF, I headed over to Surtex to see what's next in the world of surface design. Over 300 exhibitors showcased their designs which have application for textiles, soft goods, wall coverings, tabletop and floor coverings, as well as apparel, gifts and stationery.
Overall, the art reflected an effervescent and refreshing perspective, enlivened with plenty of color for pop. Globally inspired designs contributed an exotic feel via multicolored, saturated paisley motifs, Moroccan tile inspired prints and abstracted ikats and batiks.
Romantic florals and digital lace prints made an expressive, feminine statement. Expect florals to gain momentum, with varieties ranging from sweet ditsy prints to oversize, painterly versions. While all florals are strengthening, the rose is currently in season and best prized in delicate, modern renderings.
Geometric prints remain important (think chevron) and look great in high-contrast color pairings like black and white, and navy and orange.
