A photography exhibit documenting efforts to end child labor in South Asia's carpet industry is on display at Miami International Airport's South Terminal Art Gallery through April of 2010. The collection, Faces of Freedom: Behind the Looms, was developed by Washington, D.C.-based RugMark USA with award-winning photographer U. Roberto Romano. The exhibit also features Himalayan wool carpets by Odegard.
RugMark USA, an international nonprofit working to end child labor and offer educational opportunities to children in South Asia, assures that the carpets are child-labor-free through its GoodWeave certification program. Experts estimate that child labor in South Asia's carpet looms has dropped by two-thirds since the launch of RugMark in 1994.
Rugmark recently launched its eighth annual rug raffle to benefit the GoodWeave program. A $25 donation buys a chance to win a handmade GoodWeave-certified rug, designed and donated by N.Y.-based Warp & Weft. The rug has a retail value of $10,800 and is on display at Warp & Weft's studio in the Washington, D.C. Design Center. The drawing will take place on Dec. 16, 2009, and the winner will be notified the following day. Tickets may be purchased at goodweave.org/raffle.
