Rugs, lighting are stars of contemporary show

By Carole Sloan -- Home Accents Today, 6/1/2006 12:00:00 AM

Craft approaches to accessory and lighting design, an abundance of chandelier innovations and an array of rugs that far surpassed the breadth of previous years, were highlights in the non-furniture segments of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair held at the Javits Convention Center here last month.

In home textiles, decorative pillows — especially those with unique trims or whimsical looks — were among the favorites.

By far, the rug category offered some of the most sophisticated designs as well as creative innovations in construction, with many of the introductions carrying the appearance of wall art. And across the category, price appeared to be no object in keeping with the design and quality levels of the product.

Pleating came to the forefront in lighting designs as well as in fabric and paper treatments that were featured as accessories or as wall or window hangings.

Black and white continued as the major color statement, except in the pavilion organized by Cosmit, the Italian furniture and home furnishings group where bold bursts of color held sway.
