Shades of Light breaks ground on new facility

Shades of Light, a multi-channel lighting and home decor retailer based in Richmond, Va., is breaking ground on a new headquarters and distribution facility in Chesterfield County, Va.

The company evaluated potential sites for the new headquarters facility throughout the greater Richmond area with the assistance of Chris Rice of NAI Eagle, and ultimately decided on the Sommerville complex in Midlothian near the intersection of Route 288 and Midlothian Turnpike. The final contract was signed in May 2015 and the project is scheduled for completion by December 2015.

The new facility is being developed by Katherman & Co. and will encompass a total of 83,162 square feet of combined distribution, production and office space. The project also includes an adjacent undeveloped site that can accommodate another 27,000 square feet of expansion space to accommodate Shades of Light's future growth.

Shades of Light is currently operating out of three separate locations that it will consolidate into the new facility once the project is complete. Roughly 65 of the company's 80 employees will work at the new facility. The company does not plan to relocate either of its Richmond showrooms from their current locations on Broad St. or Midlothian Turnpike.

Shades of Light owners Bryan Johnson and Chris Menasco said, "Since acquiring Shades of Light in 2011, sales have grown substantially and our employee head count has nearly doubled. We are rapidly outgrowing our current distribution center and corporate office and found it necessary to consolidate into one larger facility to streamline our operations and allow for continued growth. We will be consolidating three separate locations into the new location, including our distribution center, corporate office and a production facility related to our acquisition of Colonial Metalcrafts in 2013."
