June sales up 9% at Macy's, Kohl's and Ross

June sales were up by 9% over June last year at Macy's, Kohl's and Ross Stores, the retailers reported today.
Home was one of the strongest merchandise categories last month at Ross, where sales increased 9% to $725 million for the five weeks ended July 3, 2010, up from $666 million for the five weeks ended July 4, 2009. Comparable store sales for the month grew 5%. For the five months ended July 3, 2010, sales totaled $3.274 billion, a 12% increase over the $2.922 billion in sales for the five months ended July 4, 2009. Comparable store sales for the five months ended July 3, 2010 increased 8% on top of a 3% gain last year.
Michael Balmuth, Ross Stores Inc.vice chairman and CEO, commented, "June comparable store sales slightly exceeded our expectations for a 3% to 4% increase. Home, dresses and shoes were our strongest merchandise categories, while Florida and the Mid-Atlantic were the best-performing regions."
Macy's, Inc. reported total sales of $2.229 billion for the five weeks ended July 3, 2010, an increase of 9% compared with total sales of $2.044 billion in the five weeks ended July 4, 2009. Comparable store sales were up 6.5% in June. Year to date, Macy's sales are up 6.7%, and comparable store sale are up 4.9%, from the same period last year. Online sales (macys.com and bloomingdales.com combined) are up 32.5% for the year to date.
Macy's expects comparable store sales for the second quarter of 2010 to be approximately 4.5% ahead of last year, and up by 3% to 3.5% for the full year. The company operates about 850 department stores in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico under the names of Macy's and Bloomingdale's.
Kohl's total sales for the five-week month ended July 3, 2010 increased 9.1% over the five-week month ended July 4, 2009, and comparable store sales increased 5.9%. For the year-to-date period, total sales increased 9.6% and comparable store sales increased 6.2%.
Kevin Mansell, Kohl's chairman, president and CEO, said, "As expected, we reported stronger sales early in the month as the Memorial Day holiday fell in fiscal June this year. We continue to be pleased with e-commerce sales which were better than planned for the month and have increased almost 50% over 2009 year-to-date."
Kohl's operates 1,067 stores in 49 states, compared to 1,022 in 49 states at the same time last year.
Macy's, Kohl's and Ross Stores are ranked number 6, 9 and 14, respectively on Home Accents Today's list of the Top 50 Home Accent Retailers (by sales volume). The 2010 Top 50 list will publish in the August issue.
