The recession-dominated economy took its toll on the largest home accents retailers during 2009. Stores on this year's exclusive Top 50 ranking sold $33.8 billion worth of home accent products last year, a sales decrease of 3.2% from $34.9 billion in 2008.
Discount department stores and off-price retailers continued to dominate the ranking, accounting for 43% of the Top 50. But these stores, which include Wal-Mart and Target, were not without their share of difficulty, posting an overall 2.7% sales drop from 2008 stats. No. 1-ranked Wal-Mart posted a sales decline of 4.5% to reach $6.01 billion in sales, while Target dropped nearly 10% to fall to $3.685 billion. Those two stores alone account for nearly 30% of the overall sales by the Top 50.
