Ikea considers partnering with third-party e-commerce sites

To begin testing in 2018

Ikea is looking into a partnership with e-commerce sites – potentially Amazon or Alibaba – that would bring the Swedish home furnishings giant’s products onto additional online shopping portals according to a report from Reuters.

"On digital platforms, we only sell our products through our own website, and there we also see that the competitive landscape is changing," Inter Ikea Group Chief Executive Torbjorn Loof told Reuters. "I leave unsaid on which (platforms), but we will test and pilot, to see 'what does this mean, what does digital shopping look like in future and what do digital shopping centers mean?’”

Loof said Ikea expects to start testing the plan in 2018 but he declined to name any potential partners, noting that no contracts had been signed.

Amazon is considering an increase in the amount of furniture it sells. The report notes that Ikea could also potentially partner with Alibaba, Amazon’s Chinese rival to sell its ready-to-assemble product online.
