August 3, 2017,
When I was raising my daughters in the D.C. suburb of Arlington, summers were all about swim team schedules, play dates, and Eastern Shore beach trips. One of the things I always looked forward to was the annual Congressional Baseball Game, played in those days at Prince George’s Stadium.
The game has gotten tons of attention lately due to the horrible tragedy that took place last month. As a result, I’ve thought a lot about it in recent days – how congressional members of both parties came together and laughed, joked, showed off their ball playing “skills” and, afterwards, all broke bread together in the form of hot dogs and hamburgers at a post-game party in one of the stadium suites. It was a great event and I was glad to see that it went on as usual despite the shooting.
By the time this issue hits mailboxes, Sophie’s birthday will have passed and I’ll be mom to a 30-year-old. Wow. Talk about time flying.
Sophie will be celebrating that birthday in her first home, a lovely hundred-something-year-old town home she and her fiancé purchased on Capitol Hill a few weeks ago.
I’m so proud and happy for her, and I’m dying to see how she decorates. One of the first photos she texted was a living room shot with a new rug that had just been delivered from Wayfair. Another text was a photo of a round nautical-style mirror with the question, “What would you call this kind of mirror?” Now, the photos are scenes of flooring and painted-walls-in-process, and the questions range from great windowbox vines to recessed lighting.
Thanks to the internet and text messaging, I’m getting a play-by-play view as this house is being lovingly transformed into Sophie’s home.
In September, Millennial consumers and homeowners like Sophie will be discussed at length during Progressive Business Media’s annual NEXT Conference, being held in Washington, D.C. To make it even more interesting, the venue is the Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals baseball team and the Congressional Baseball Game!
NEXT, set for Sept. 25-27, explores the future of retail and brings together forward-thinking leaders, up-and-comers and early adopters to discuss, create and share the ideas that will shape the future of home furnishings. We can’t predict the future of course, but NEXT is designed to build and present a foundation that will help retailers prepare for it, understand it and lead through it.
We’re working on a super agenda of speakers, programming and “fun-time” events, so pencil in the dates and check it out at pbmconferences.com.
And now, let’s turn our attention back to the present.
In this issue you’ll find our summer trend stories, 14 pages of new product intros, our annual furniture store survey, and new research and reporting on imports, lighting for the aging, and e-commerce.
We’ve got busy weeks ahead, a lot of ground to cover, and much reporting to do.
Let’s play ball!
