Gill wins ASID Foundation's first David Barrett Memorial Scholarship

WASHINGTON — The ASID Foundation has chosen Philip Gill as the first recipient of its David Barrett Memorial Scholarship. Gill is a Masters candidate of Interior Architecture in the collaborative study program between the University of California, Los Angeles Extension and California Polytechnic University, Pomona.
"I'm thrilled to receive the first David Barrett Memorial Scholarship," Gill said. "This award validates the continuing importance of classical design and traditional materials in interior design education and practice."
The scholarship jury recognized Gill's thoughtful work and clear demonstration of classical design.
After completing his Masters program, Gill intends to establish an interior design firm focusing on residential interior design and furniture design in San Diego. He plans to use part of his $12,000 scholarship to attend classes at the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art in New York City, and he eventually hopes to teach and establish a custom furniture line.
The David Barrett Memorial Scholarship recognizes an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student's work which demonstrates a continuing interest and ability in utilizing classical designs, according to a press release from ASID. The scholarship was established in memory of David Barrett, FASID, who died on Dec. 8, 2008.
Throughout his 58-year career, Barrett practiced mainly residential design. He also lectured and appeared on television, and his work has been published in several major design publications.
The 2011 David Barrett Memorial Scholarship Jury was comprised of Barbara Barry, ASID; Juliana M. Catlin, FASID; Mariette Himes Gomez, ASID; Julie R. Schulte, ASID.
