NEW YORK, N.Y. - Alan Steel, former president of GLM, has been has been named president and CEO of the Jacob K.
Alan Steel
Javits Convention Center in New York City, reports Trade Show News Network.
Steel, a 30-year veteran of the trade show industry with GLM, replaces Gerald T. McQueen, who resigned the post in October 2011 after 14 years. McQueen has remained in place until a successor was named.
"I'm excited to have the opportunity to work with the various constituencies which interact with the Javits Center," Steel told TSNN. "It's obviously an interesting time here. My primary goals will be to make a real difference to the customer experience and to address issues and opportunities related to recent announcements concerning the building's future."
Steel is well acquainted with the Javits Center and the complexities of trade show business, having overseen the strategic planning and direction of the GLM-produced trade shows, including the New York International Gift Fair, The National Stationery Show and SURTEX, during his tenure with the company.
Alan has odd management skills, if you make him look good you are OK. If you criticise him or any of his devoted minions (his wife who does PR for GLM, her best friend also a GLM employee etc) you have a problem. The only way he can succeed is to have a dedicated, professional staff because Alan prefers to socialize and make connections, work on his computer but relies on his staff to let him know the temperature of the staff and their motivation. He is not a good manager.Hopefully he inherits a good group or he'll be in trouble and so will Javits and the trade show industry.
s cavanaugh - 2012-03-07 09:07:30 ESTI disagree. Alan Steele is a professional and an innoovator. He definately knows the trade show industry especially in New York. Did you get the memo about the economy? I wish him success.
Lynn Courtade - 2012-03-02 07:29:36 ESTmistake, mistake, mistake. Steele will be out by early next year - based on his previous performance at GLM. he should have never been chosen
