Kohl's, Target make donations toward Hurricane Sandy relief; start to reopen NE stores

NEW YORK -- Kohl's Corp. and Target Corp. are among the many retailers making donations and offering support as relief efforts continue in Hurricane Sandy's aftermath.

Target today said it had donated $500,000 in funds and products, including $425,000 in cash and in-kind donations to the American Red Cross, $50,000 in cash donation to the Salvation Army and $25,000 in gift cards to local Target stores to help with community needs.

"Our thoughts are with the all of the residents impacted by Hurricane Sandy and we hope our donation will aid in the East Coast's recovery," said Gregg Steinhafel, chairman, president and CEO of Target.

Target has reopened the majority of its stores across the East Coast and is in the process of assessing the storm's impact on its facilities. The majority of Target stores are open, but a few remain closed. In addition, the discounter said it will continue to monitor road conditions and work with its distribution centers and vendors, once transportation restrictions are lifted, "to replenish our stores quickly with essentials the community needs for clean-up and recovery."

Kohl's Department Stores today said it has made a $1 million cash donation toward hurricane relief efforts along the East Coast. These funds are being distributed to the American Red Cross, which is delivering much-needed emergency supplies and services in the hurricane-impacted areas.

In addition to a financial contribution, Kohl's said it is encouraging its associates to volunteer in support of cleanup efforts through its Associates in Action program. In recognition of volunteer hours, Kohl's will donate additional corporate grants to the nonprofit organizations being supported by Kohl's associates.

Vicki Shamion, Kohl's senior vice president of public relations, social marketing and community relations, said the hurricane's destruction "has been great, the need will be ongoing, and Kohl's is proud to be in a position to provide financial assistance, as well as volunteer service, to our valued customers, associates and residents along the East Coast."
