Port strike ends in Los Angeles, Long Beach

LOS ANGELES - Striking clerical workers have agreed to return to work today at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, ending a work stoppage that had shut down most shipping terminals at the nation's two busiest ports.

According to reports in the Los Angeles Times and other media outlets, an agreement was reached late Tuesday night, Pacific Time, after two federal mediators were brought into the negotiations.

The walkout by the small clerical workers union, which began last week, had essentially shut down the two ports because unionized dock workers had honored their picket lines.
