WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - NY NOW Handmade, one of four new product collections to debut at the summer edition of NY NOW, the Market for Home & Lifestyle (formerly NYIGF), will showcase 500 juried exhibitors of exceptional handmade resources at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, Aug.17-20, 2013.
Highlights of the summer 2013 market include the debut of more than 40 first-time artisans, a new logo to identify American made craft resources, and a seminar series hosted by Craft Retailers & Artisans for Tomorrow (CRAFT). In an extension of the market's global handmade resources, the third semi-annual edition of Artisan Resource, a first-of-its kind tradeshow providing global artisanal craft resources for volume import retailers, will run concurrently with the summer edition of NY NOW.
"Handmade resources are one of four cornerstone collections of NY NOW, and the Handmade Collection presents artisanal products across the home and lifestyle spectrum - tabletop, home décor, jewelry and apparel - crafted in all media," said Christian Falkenberg, NY NOW director and GLM senior vice president. "To facilitate the buyer's experience, artisans in this important market category will continue to be classified by process and provenance and showcased in two distinct categories - Handmade Designer Maker and Handmade Global Design."
Located in Javits Center North, Handmade Designer Maker will showcase 350 limited-production makers across all categories and media resources from 37 states and nine countries. Alongside the American artisans, groups from Germany and the United Kingdom will return to the summer market (each with approximately 20 designer-makers) and a new group from France will debut with 20 artisans.
Sixteen newly-accepted exhibitors will participate in Handmade Designer Maker: Alena Hennessy (textiles and pillows); Alison Evans (jewelry); Art Glass Design Studio (glass); Boris Bally (furniture and home accessories); Caren Shen & Stefan Bayer (textiles and shawls); Dave Marcoullier [wood routings] (decorative and functional wood); Emanuela Duca, Inc. (jewelry); Houston Llew (decorative tiles); ige (wall hangings, stuffed animals, pillows, mobiles); JF Jones Mobiles (copper mobiles); Lio&Linn wood+metal (jewelry, accessories, furniture); LUprints (textiles and pillows); nikolai E (wood furniture and clocks); Romeo Glass (glass); Swaine Street Woodworking (wood cutting boards) and Vegetabowls (ceramic bowls).
Located in the Javits Center's Level 4 Galleria, Handmade Global Design features a collection of 150 exhibitors from 15 countries with a focus on traditional craftsmanship, design, and community building through global artisan workshops. Eight companies have been accepted to join the summer market: Asian Eye (textiles and scarves); Chilote House Shoes (woven shoes); Focalpoint Home (textiles and towels); Made by Survivors (jewelry and accessories); MyMela.com (home décor, jewelry and accessories); Niteo (leather wallets and accessories); Project Have Hope (jewelry and accessories) and String Theory Rug & Textile (textiles and rugs).
During market week, several events and seminars are directed to craft retailers. CRAFT will return with a three-day series of six Power Hours on topics covering social media and marketing. On August 17, a seminar panel - "Cash-In on the Cachet of Made in the U.S.A" - will address how to capitalize on this growing consumer preference. Programming details and registration are available at nynow.com/programs.
NY NOW also will continue its program - launched at the winter 2013 market in partnership with CRAFT - to credential and identify American-made crafts. Qualifying exhibitors in Handmade Designer Maker and throughout NY NOW will display identifying booth signage with a new Made in the USA logo. Artwork for the logo is being commissioned in advance of market week by Red Clay, a collaborative product design studio, through an online competition among designers across the U.S. Additionally, a new Made in the USA display will showcase a wide variety of products that are both handmade and commercially made in the United States.
Running concurrently with NY NOW is the third semi-annual edition of Artisan Resource, a tradeshow offering U.S.-based volume import retailers and wholesalers the opportunity to meet with international artisanal producers. Artisan Resource runs August 18-20, 2013, at the Passenger Ship Terminal's Pier 94. Information and registration is available at artisanresourceny.com.
NY NOW, the Market for Home & Lifestyle, will run Aug. 17-21, 2013 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Pier 94. NY NOW's four comprehensive collections - HOME, LIFESTYLE, HANDMADE and NEW! - will encompass 100,000 products in 400+ product categories. Some 35,000 attendees from all 50 states and more than 80 countries worldwide are expected.
