In September 2008, 12 families stepped forward to revive Norwalk Custom Order Furniture, a company on the verge of shuttering its doors.
They moved swiftly to re-establish the traditions of a company founded 111 years ago on quality craftsmanship and prompt delivery at a very competitive price.
"We've made extraordinary strides over the past five years," said Mike Kenney, president of Norwalk Custom Order Furniture. "We've recently renewed a long-term High Point showroom lease and during the past two years we've opened a showroom in Las Vegas, added a dedicated sales team on the West Coast and opened a new showroom at our corporate offices for customer training, a pre-market in the spring and fall, and as a showcase for new designs in custom upholstery."
From 2009 to 2013, Norwalk's staff increased from 91 to 177 employees. Production jumped from 71 to 180 units per day and from 21,146 to 34,920 units made annually. Sales increased from $15.1 million to $24.5 million and retailers grew from 154 to 424 in that time period.
To honor the occasion, a celebration is planned on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m., complete with a cocktail reception, dinner, music, a slide show of memorable moments over the past five years and acknowledgement of the dedicated service of both investors and employees. Brightly colored t-shirts will showcase Norwalk's diverse color and fabric palette with the slogan ‘Made in the U.S.A, Inspired by the World.'
On Sept. 27, employees and investors will gather to watch as representatives from each of the 12 original families plant trees along Furniture Parkway leading up to the Norwalk factory.
"The trees are being planted to symbolize new growth, similar to that experienced by Norwalk," Kenney said. "We will have an engraved plaque near the trees that reads, ‘Each of these trees represents one of the 12 families who brought life back to this factory. As these trees grow and flourish over the coming years, so will Norwalk Custom Order Furniture."
