IFDA NY 2013 Big Apple Award gala honors Brooklyn Bridge Park

The New York Chapter of the International Furnishings and Design Association honored Brooklyn Bridge Park and itspresident, Regina Myer with its 2013 Big Apple Award on October 1st at Galapagos Art Space, one block from the sustainably designed, 85-acre waterfront park.
"A crush of design and furnishings professionals mingled with city, park, industry & education dignitaries," said IFDA NY's Su Hilty, who co-chaired the event with Paul Thomas. "Many industry big names were there too, including Jim Brett, president of West Elm; Kate Kelly Smith, Hearst Design Group SVP and longtime IFDA member; Dr. Thomas Schutte, Pratt Institute; and Alexa Hampton, designer and president at Mark Hampton, to name just a few."
President of the organization since 2007, Myer oversees all aspects of the $350 million park, including design, construction and maintenance. Stretching 1.3 miles along the East River, the park, designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, provides green space that captures views to Brooklyn Bridge and New York Harbor and features playing fields, playgrounds, running and bicycle paths and sport courts as well as a calm water area for kayaking and canoeing. In addition, historical properties have been integrated including Jane's Carousel, the
"It's been the job of a lifetime," said Myer when accepting the award.

Scissura, Esq., President & CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce served as Master of Ceremonies introducing speakers Doug Blonsky, President & CEO, Central Park Conservancy; Susan Chin, Executive Director, Design Trust for Public Space; Paul Seck, Principal of Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, and The Honorable Robert K. Steel, Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, NYC.
The Big Apple Award is presented to New York businesses and institutions that have had a positive impact on thecultural and commercial life of the city. Past recipients of 17 Awards given include Grand Central Station, the Museum of Modern Art, and The Museum of Arts and Design. IFDA NY offers special thanks to event patrons 3M and GE Monogram.
