Transitional Looks Still Top of Styles

By Tracy Bulla -- Home Accents Today, 11/1/2004

Transitional and contemporary looks remain at the forefront of design in lamp and lighting offerings. With more clean, pared-down offerings than ever, manufacturers are searching for a way to distinguish themselves from a sea of simple lines.

Some of the freshest looks showcase a return to elegance, honing in on small but substantial details. Just as the fitted jacket (think Chanel) has returned in fashion, portable lamp designs are embracing a tailored, chic sensibility. Exquisitely proportioned shades feature a discreet piped border or contrast trim for that extra special touch. Solid shades are in demand and the quality of the fabrication is paramount. Sheened silks are a top pick for a luxurious feel, while linen, suede and subtly textured fabrics are popular choices for a more casual, yet no less luxurious appeal.

Thin is apparently in as table and floor lamps literally showed off a slimmer silhouette. From the shades down to the bases, oval and rectangular forms were compressed and flattened into rail-thin forms when viewed from the side, adding diminutive charm to these dieting designs.

And while softer contemporary designs are stealing the show, it is worth mentioning that many of these looks are based on highly classical designs, reworked and reinterpreted in a fresh, snappy package. Less the gilding, tassels and elaborate details, it's easily in view. Moreover, pairings of opposing styles, such as a classic shade with a modern Asian base, result in upbeat, hip designs.

A reaction against resin has brought all forms of natural materials into the spotlight, drawing on everything from metal and wood to rock crystal and shells. The combination is all-important as mixed-media designs surge ahead in style direction.

Designs range from funky and exotic to sleek and contemporary, but, apparently, getting back to nature is on everyone's minds these days.
