From Wal-Mart to Stein Mart

The Top 50 home accent retailers garnered $28.6 billion in home accent sales in 2003, up 7.8% from $26.5 billion for the same group in 2002. The Top 50 sold home accent products through 29,903 stores in 2003, a net gain of 1,446 stores from 2002.

Accounting for 37.7% of the Top 50, discount department stores and off-price retailers sold $10.8 billion in home accents in 2003. Wal-Mart is the undisputed leader of the channel and alone accounts for 20.4% of the Top 50. In fact, the world's largest retailer accounts for 9.4% of the entire 2003 home accents universe, estimated at $61.8 billion.

The Home improvement center/warehouse membership club channel pulled in $4.6 billion in 2003 home accent sales, an increase of 13% over 2002. Fueled by store expansions, the channel's leaders, No. 2 Lowe's and No. 3 Home Depot, together sold $2.9 billion in home accents. Lowe's opened a net of 98 centers in 2003 and Home Depot opened a net of 265.

Atlanta-based Expo Design Center and Framingham, Mass.-based HomeGoods experienced the fastest home accents sales growth of the Top 50, at 28.6% and 26.9% respectively.

No. 46 Family Dollar opened the largest number of stores in 2003, a net gain of 422.

Methodology

Home Accent Today's exclusive survey of the Top 50 Home Accent Retailers ranks the top U.S. retailers by their 2003 sales of home accents.

Data is based on 12 months ended Dec. 31, 2003, unless otherwise noted. All sales figures, except those of publicly held companies which break out home accent sales as a separate line of business, are Home Accents Today market research estimates.

Estimates were derived from a variety of sources, including the companies themselves, public company filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, discussions with industry analysts and suppliers, as well as published and unpublished reports, including newspaper articles in various retailing areas.

Sales estimates are based on estimated 2003 sales of decorative accessories, including candles, baskets, garden accessories and picture frames, as well as portable lamps, accent furniture, collectibles, tabletop and tabletop accessories, wall decor, permanent botanicals, area rugs, decorative pillows, throws and luxury linens.

In cases where retailers have identical estimated home accent sales, the one with the fastest sales growth is ranked higher.
