Spring 2005 Market Sketchbook: The New Classics

Reinvented and refined, traditional designs take center stage with remarkable aplomb. A strain of subdued glamour runs its course with this trend, rooted in highly classic beginnings. Overall, simplified lines push this look in a cleaner, more up-to-date direction. Still without skimping in any way, embellishment is achieved by classical motifs like damask, stripes and coral and tailored, elegant detailing such as nailhead trim and piping. As they say, once a classic, always a classic.

The oval mirror from Friedman Bros. proves simplicity in design can also be its greatest asset ($1,350). eLink 71010

A little goes a long way, as piping and other tailored elements create a visual pop in USA Rags' Lindsay Sofa ($3,168). eLink 684

A hint of gold leaf trim and simple nailhead detailing adds elegance to the resolutely refined shape of the Three Hands ottoman ($299). eLink 671

Intricate dimensional pleating polishes Jeffrey Fisher Home's chic linen pillows to perfection ($140 to $150). eLink 556

Classic meets modern in Cindy Ciskowski's shapely ceramic, damask and Lucite design ($475). eLink 682

Reproduced from an antique print of brain coral, the Old World appeal of Gallery Gallery's streamlined design is enhanced by a hand-wrapped linen mat with aged walnut frame. eLink 530

Finished in aged iron, the Taranto Chandelier from Arteriors Home shows off smooth, flowing curves in graceful style ($1,099). eLink 571

Combed stripes heighten the traditional impact of Carson & Company's mirrored chest of drawers, infusing it with a subtle sense of whimsy ($6,800). eLink 614

From Nature's Gallery, a quintessential topiary design creates an architectural statement with a moss- and vine-covered weathered finial ($266). eLink 625

Grapefruit Flower, a new addition to the Janellestyle Collection from Surya, packs a bold, graphic punch with crisp, updated florals ($450, 5×8). eLink 699
