ABC Carpet & Home launches line of salvaged furniture

Staff -- Home Accents Today, 5/1/2005

ABC Carpet & Home has opened Grounded, a new department featuring salvaged and recycled furniture within the store's Manhattan location.

Grounded is a collection of one-of-a-kind recycled and reclaimed furniture, found objects and lighting, each configured to reflect the ABC aesthetic vision. All products in the Grounded collection have a singular pre-history: for example, tabletops fashioned from deconstructed barn timber; benches that began as cut-offs from a guitar factory mill; petrified stone slabs retrieved from beneath the earth; chairs upholstered with vintage Beiruti tapestries; and lighting fixtures formed from old kitchen implements.

Grounded marries natural and traditional elements and mixed periods and provenances to create a mix of art and artifacts.

Among the highlights of the Grounded collection:

  • Teak tables — Reclaimed floorboards and tabletops from Asia have been set on newly-fashioned bases crafted of zinc and wrought iron
  • Petrified slabs — Ancient wood fossil stone tree trunk stools, some 2 to 3 million years old and excavated from 60 feet below ground, have their tops polished to reveal fossilized growth rings
  • Suzani collection — These vibrant hand-woven antique Lebanese tapestry fragments are teamed with contemporary wood frames, and brought back to life as upholstered pieces
  • Contemporary benches and tables — Repurposed heart pine, poplar, walnut, cherry, maple and other fine rare woods have been turned into one-of-a-kind tables, benches and nightstands
  • Found objects — Root furniture from Indonesia, Philippine mahogany and driftwood function as tables or freestanding bars
  • Peruvian rugs — Salvaged from old rugs, ABC selects these pastel woolens to upholster a distinctive line of low sofas and ottomans, each one unique

"Grounded celebrates the earth and our connection to the ground itself," said Paulette Cole, CEO and creative director of ABC Carpet & Home. "When we recycle lumber salvaged from a dismantled barn — and use it to create a tabletop — we acknowledge the age of the wood while recognizing the functionality for today's lifestyle. All our Grounded product offerings celebrate sustainability with beauty, comfort and style."

The Grounded line shows off reclaimed floorboards and petrified wood slabs re-created into furniture pieces.
