1993: Coming into our own

Edited by Lisa Casinger -- Home Accents Today, 6/1/2005

The year 1993 was a milestone. In January we started spreading our wings and venturing out of the Furniture/Today 'nest' by covering more gifts, as we called them then, like photo frames, soft goods, collectibles, decorative tabletop and more.

Though furniture and department stores still were our main retail focus, we started covering up-and-coming boutique stores. We called them "point-of-view" stores. By July we decided all of the categories and stores we covered were actually home accents (yes, we coined the phrase) and to show our commitment to them, we became Home Accents Today. This year also marked a change in distribution as we no longer tagged along with Furniture/Today, but had our own circulation and mailings.

Our metamorphosis included a redesign, adding more color and features and our growing emphasis on style and trends with sketchbooks, style beats and design directions. Research also played an ever-important role.
