Colors muted, fabrics softened at textile market

By Carole Sloan -- Home Accents Today, 12/1/2005

Updated classic traditional and softened but not minimalist contemporary were the major design statements throughout the October Home Textiles Market in New York.

But standing in the wings were hints of a new wave of Southwestern design influences, especially in decorative pillows and bed ensembles.

Infused color was a major part of the newness in product. Brights were toned down, less flashy, and quite livable.

Richly colored florals were a fresh change from the muted tea-stained and chenille effects in both prints and wovens for bed ensembles, decorative pillows, window coverings and table linens. And the flashy brights of recent seasons took on a new, more subtle demeanor.

In bedding, decorative dressmaker details created an upscale impression with small, close pleating as ruffled edges of comforters, buttons and bows, lace, eyelet, macrame and appliqué as embellishments.

Prints were more prevalent than in recent markets, while chenille jacquards — the dominant fabric for a number of years — was barely evident. Silk was a popular fiber, used in taffeta, dupioni or jacquard fabric constructions, as well as in blends with cotton or linen.

Towels were a fiber and fashion highlight with bamboo and silk assuming a luxury role in offering softness, primarily in blends with cotton, but occasionally used alone.

The new fibers are designed to offer more softness as well as better absorbency.

Bath accessories have become more like home accessories, no longer designed for use only in bathrooms.
