Metallics step forward, beading slows down

There's gold in them thar hills.
And also on the beds and sofas of many Americans if the new home textiles lines shown in New York earlier this month are any indication. Gold, both in its metallic versions and as a color in fabrics, was clearly the favorite of designers across most price points.
Not to be overshadowed, platinum as a color and a sheen on fabrics, was a more subtle partner in the glitter parade.
Still holding on to its popularity of several seasons' duration, but now more mainstream in usage, was a vast range of browns and blues, ranging from deep rich chocolates to soft caramels and beiges on the brown side, and aquas to robin's egg shades in the blue family.
Embellishments again were a key part of the design effort in bedding and on decorative pillows. Embroideries, lace, macramé and appliqués all played important roles in the overall design of products. Sequins and beading seem to have had their day.

In fabrics for bedding and decorative pillows, sheen was a significant player with taffetas and shantung effects moving up into favored positions. Chenille definitely was on the downturn after years of dominating the fabric scene.
While comforters still prevail as the bed covering of choice, there are growing indications that the pendulum is moving toward a former favorite – bedspreads. This market's bedding entries were mostly comforters, but many suppliers hedged their bets – or predicted the future – by offering the same style as a bedspread.
And much in the manner of high-end designer brands like Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein Home and Donna Karan Home, more companies introduced quilts as bed accessories – often in a range of colors to work across their full line of bedding.

Across all price points, suppliers turned to organic cotton as the new story for sheets, adding to the natural story with vegetable dyes.
