My new glasses
Becky Boswell Smith -- Home Accents Today, 7/1/2006
Amazing, isn't it, how things look different in a new pair of glasses. Two pair, actually, but don't tell anyone.
As I'm posturing and preening in my new frames, I realize the optical industry might be smarter than some of us are.
It wasn't a matter of needing new glasses — the others are just a year old and I can see fine with them, thank you very much. But let me tell you about the shopping experience to get them. That's the trick.
First the store, itself, is exciting, located downtown in a restored building, but freshened with white walls and light wood floors, lots of windows and mirrors. They sell locally designed spectacular jewelry, original art from local artists and very cool glasses.
I didn't buy the first time I was there. It was a reception to kick off a sale, there was wine and music and a personable owner named Becky (no relation) who agreed I didn't need new glasses, but pointed out the ones I wore were "aging."
It was a fun party with much the feeling of a gallery opening.
I went back the following week and bought two pair and, whether the rest of the world thinks so, I feel ever so much better. I may not see any better, but I look a lot better.
It was a shopping experience that I think can be translated into creating desire for new lamps, a rug or some pillows. Our customers don't really have to wear out their accessories before they buy again. They just have to want new things — and it's our job to make them want a change.
See you at the shows.
