Art Glass Mod Squad

Tracy Bulla -- Home Accents Today, 8/1/2005

Sleek and sultry, contemporary styling marks the best in art glass designs. While voluptuous forms are still ever so shapely, the current look makes a thin-is-in statement as shapes are streamlined with a slimmer perspective. Curves are by no means out, but look for shapes to be stretched upward, resulting in taller, towering pieces of super-skinny proportions. Metallic highlights, saturated jewel tones, and abstracted geometrics top off the trends with a dash of bohemian flair.

Minaret-inspired stoppers create exotic cachet in Mila Brown's new jewel-toned perfume bottles ($205 each).

Sleek, cylindrical forms are texturized with bubbled, hammered glass and spiral applique, scaling up Maitland-Smith's vases in chic fashion ($30 to $70).

Fiery-hued, overlapping tiers of "feathers" dress up the new stem vase from Evolution by Waterford ($275).

Soapbubbles, a new design from Ann Wahlstrom for Kosta Boda, juxtaposes pure shapes with translucent color for sheer visual effect.

Sprawling root forms enhance the inherent organic vibe of glass in Esque's bud vases ($368 to $473).

Light, sparkle and color add sizzling flair to The Phillips Collection's gold-flecked, hand-blown glass vases ($385).

Shimmering like quicksilver, slender bottles from Repertoire evoke cutting-edge, mod styling ($25 to $32).

Abstract stripes punch up John-Richard's skinny, skyscraping vases ($159 to $205).

Inspired by an archival design from 1931, Moser's Flying Decanter set debuts in clear, giving the elegantly askew design a perfectly modern slant ($1,850, decanter and six tumblers).

Global Views donates a portion of the Murano Peace doves purchase price to Save the Children ($650, pair).

A shimmering hint of iridescence luxes up the luster on Seguso Viro's Murano glass shells ($360 each).

Eye-popping waves of applied color bring a fun, contemporary viewpoint to Jamie Harris Studio's classic, elongated bottle shapes ($200 each).
