Times of change

Staff -- Home Accents Today, 9/1/2006

Whew — it's almost a change of season where we live, although like most of the South and even the Northeast we are cautiously moving through hurricane season and wondering what destruction lies near. The last of the summer shows has ended and we're just weeks away from the first Monday-Sunday High Point Market.

And that's official, by the way. Now, it's the High Point Market, not that long International Home Furnishings Market. Easier to say and to read. Of course, the International Home Furnishings Center, which everyone calls the IHFC, remains the same, so we'll still have the influence.

But the question most on industry minds, exhibitor, retailer and sales rep, as we approach High Point is "will they really stick to the Monday-Sunday schedule?" Everyone is saying definitely yes. I wonder what is going to happen when a major retailer wants to shop Saturday before opening. There just are some folks who have to be first. Wonder what will happen?

One thing that definitely is going to happen this year is the World-Famous, Not to Be Missed, Get-Down Fun High Point Party (that's how we affectionately refer to our traditional Thursday night event in the Century Courtyard of Market Square) is moving nights. We'll kick off the home accents part of the market Monday night with music, wine, beer and good friends.

Get in the new habit and bring your friends. It's a good party.

This issue carries a lot of good information we hope will be helpful to you as you make decisions about your business. Our Accent Furniture Portfolio is inside, presenting an in-depth look at what's happening in the category of accent furniture, which you probably know is one of the most popular and most important in our business. Almost every retailer carries at least some accent furniture. What we do is show you what trends we see in the category for coming months as well as a thorough listing of companies that sell accent furniture. We know it is a package no one else provides and we hope it meets your needs.

Many people in the industry are spending a few days this month in Europe, checking out the major shows. Next month, we'll have a report for you from Maison & Objet. Again, we're committed to being helpful to you.
