Decorize has signed an exclusive contract with Wal-Mart to develop a line of nine canvas paintings by Decorize artist and designer, J. Michael Sandel. The 36×36-inch paintings will be available in select Wal-Mart stores in early 2007.
"We are pleased to partner with the world's largest retailer on this introduction," said Scott Hickox, vice president of sales for Decorize, a Springfield, Mo.-based company. This is Decorize's first project for Wal-Mart, Hickox said.
Sandel, as the resident designer for Decorize subsidiary GuildMaster, designs and manufactures a full line of home accessories and accent furniture. His work includes exclusive designs for Nina Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Broyhill Furniture and, most recently, product used in HGTV's Extreme Makeover. Sandel's affiliation with Decorize began in 2001 when the company he co-owned with his wife, Faith Walk Designs, Inc., a manufacturer of upscale hand-painted furniture, was acquired by Decorize.
The day before the Wal-Mart announcement, Decorize reported a 50% sales increase for the first quarter of fiscal 2007. Total sales for the quarter were $3.2 million compared to $2.1 million for the prior year quarter. Operating loss for the quarter improved to $186,000, down from $446,000 for the same period a year ago. The company attributes its performance to expanded capacity resulting from strategic investments made over the past 18 months, including a manufacturing facility in Indonesia.
