Wall decor is perhaps the most pervasive of home accent categories with every channel carrying the product. It's easy to display and available at every price point and margins are generally high in the category. With 2005 sales of $6 billion and estimated 2006 sales of $6.1 billion, wall decor is the fourth largest home accents category.
That significant number may even be understated when one considers the popularity of original art, generally purchased at galleries, art shows and auctions.
In addition to discount department stores/off-price retailers which own nearly one-third of the market at 2005 sales of $1.7 billion, the strongest channels are direct-to-consumer, home accent/gift stores and lifestyle stores. Together, they represent about 37% of the market and a total of $2.2 billion. Each of the three channels is expected to grow in 2006 at a rate well above the entire category rate of 3.2%.
