Ikea's southeastern distribution center will open June 27 on 115 acres at the Savannah, Ga., International Trade Park.
The 685,000-sq. ft. distribution center represents the first phase of a planned 1.7 million-sq. ft. project by the Swedish company.
"Due to the progress made last year and this spring, we are confident the remaining racking and outfitting phases will be complete by late June," said Ed Morris, the center's manager.
The completed distribution center is estimated to receive approx. 15,000 20-foot containers through the Port of Savannah, reflecting nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items currently sold at Ikea stores. Ikea transports products to its 1,300 worldwide suppliers through regional distribution centers. The Savannah Distribution Center will provide the primary inventory to Ikea stores in Atlanta, Houston, Round Rock and Frisco, Texas.
Ikea's newest store just opened in Draper, Utah, a 310,000-sq.-ft. facility with 51 room settings, three model homes and a 300-seat restaurant. The new store brings the number of Ikea stores in the U.S. to 30, with more planned for New York, North Carolina, Florida, Oregon, Massachusetts and Ohio.
