While rooted in the classics, the overall appeal is distinctively contemporary and loaded with casual chic. Favorite finds include the lushly jeweled Facet glasses, foliage-laden Jardin flutes and the abstract, gold-dusted Tilt decanter set. Retail prices range from $15 to $20.

Lifestyle designer Barclay Butera has entered yet another home segment with the debut of his rug collection at the High Point Market. Hand-tufted from pure New Zealand wool in Kashmir, the style-savvy designs draw from Barclay Butera Home's top-selling fabric designs ranging from exotic ocelot and overscale houndstooth to variegated stripes and dramatic tartan. "My career and design goals have always been to create a holistic lifestyle approach that benefits my clients," Butera said. "This rug line continues to build upon and round out the lifestyle I believe in — elegance with accessibility. This is truly lifestyle from the ground up, inspired by great textile designs and textures."

Nachtmann Crystal, a division of Riedel Glassworks, has collaborated with product design students from Parsons The New School for Design to research and develop a collection of tabletop products in glass. In addition to lectures, discussions and workshops at Brooklyn's Urban Glass, the course included a trip to Germany and Austria to tour the Nachtmann and Riedel factories as well as Ambiente in Frankfurt. "Apprenticeship has always been instrumental in craft industries such as glassmaking," said Maximilian Riedel, CEO of Riedel Crystal of America. "These students are on a fast track to turn their visions into reality and we are excited to see what fresh ideas are born this spring."

Contemporary design company Umbra opened its first retail concept store in Toronto this spring. Wrapped in translucent pink cladding, the 7,000-sq.-ft. space will showcase Umbra and U+ Studio Collection products, as well as one-of-a-kind, limited edition designs, a bookstore and design studio. The sleek, minimalist flagship store also will host design symposiums and special events including product launches. "Our store will include a functioning design space where customers can see members of our team at work as well as a rotating showcase of works by our industrial, graphic and photographic designers," said Paul Rowan, co-founder and vice president of design at Umbra.

Textillery Weavers launched a collection of vibrant, joyful mixed media mosaics at High Point created from Textillery recycled yarns, fabrics and other found materials in partnership with Stone Belt Arc, a non-profit organization providing education and support to persons with disabilities. The textile mosaics are designed, packaged and distributed by persons with disabilities; revenue goes to Stone Belt programming to support the local artists. "We're especially excited about this project," said Judith Rose, head designer, Textillery Weavers. "In addition to using recycled materials, the project utilized the abilities of disabled persons in a workshop setting to create satisfying job opportunities and a new income stream for the agency. What's more, the artwork corresponds directly to the trends Textillery creates and follows as it is influenced by our color choices and direction." Prices range from $500 to $550 at retail.
