Bailey Street's new chairs are quick-change artists

Jenny Heinzen York -- Home Accents Today, 8/1/2007

Bailey Street debuted a line of custom upholstered chairs with interchangeable upholstery covers at the Las Vegas Market.

The chairs are shipped KD with a plain muslin cover. The slipcovers are available in skirted and unskirted models, and are manufactured to precisely fit the chairs for a custom upholstered look that can be easily changed.

"Change your mind, change your chair," said Jim Berk, CEO. "The basic chair is manufactured with a muslin cover as if it were to be finished in a custom upholstery shop somewhere. However, the unique proposition is the upholstery cover has already been cut and sewn to fit perfectly the specific frame of the Couture Covers chair. Once the cover is put on the chair — it takes about five minutes from box to finish — you would never know it was not custom made in a shop somewhere, it looks that good."

The covers are available now with 14 upholstery fabrics to choose from, including stripes, solids, plaids and florals.

The chairs wholesale for $62, and the covers are $24 for unskirted and $37 for skirted. They are scheduled to ship in September.

"We believe the versatility and ease of changing the covers will bring back customers to the store in search of a new look or seasonal change when the mood dictates," Berk said. "When the mood moves the customer to change her look, the investment to simply change the cover will be a fraction of the cost of changing the chairs."

"We see a number of advantages to our retailers and designers as well as the ultimate end user," said Greg Waylock, Bailey Street's president.

"The value proposition for a custom upholstered chair under $100 wholesale is unprecedented in my experience."

The company also is offering a free display case with purchase of six chairs and 12 covers.

"This is a true furniture display," Berk said. "We wanted the quality of what we're doing reflected in this display."

Bailey Street is offering its new Couture Chairs Collection in 14 upholstery options. The cover on the chair is removable (slipcover style), but when in place, offers the look of a custom piece.
