Nancy Herman is retiring from her company, Tapestries Ltd., and turning operations over to her son-in-law Andrew Kane, the company has announced.
Herman started Tapestries Ltd. 35 years ago on the back porch of her home. Her customers today include designers, homeowners and hotels and restaurants.
When she started, tapestries were a seldom-used option in the wall decor market. She traveled, studying European tapestry mills' work, design and colors. Herman used her merchandising experience to develop new ways to display these woven pieces, including display tapestries with rods, hand-painted finials and tassels. Her company today offers a range of available designs and styles.
"We've even included a line of value-driven tapestries as an alternative to the more expensive machine and hand-woven pieces," said her husband, Stanley Herman.
Although Herman is stepping down from the daily operations, she will continue to consult and work at the High Point markets.
"I've worked with my customers for many years — and in some cases decades," she said. "Our customers are like family. I've had people come into the showroom and tell me that I've worked with their mother or father. Now they are working with my children."
