The High Point Market's chief backer urged North Carolina legislators to continue contributing more than $1.36 million a year into marketing the furniture show, the Greensboro, N.C., News & Record reported.
Brian Casey, president of the High Point Market Authority, told the lawmakers that the funds are necessary to promote the market, which he said is a significant contributor to the state's economy. Rival shows, including markets in Las Vegas and Atlanta, are working hard to take a piece of the High Point business, he said.
But the market funding could be a tempting place for lawmakers to reduce spending as the state faces a budget deficit, the News & Record reported. North Carolina's two-year budget is due next month.
