From the Editor: Seeing stars

From the Editor

Jenny Heinzen York -- Home Accents Today, 3/1/2009

We're all seeing stars right now — courtesy of the big, fat whack in the face the economy has given us.

But I want to talk about stars in a different way. In the interest of considering all sources for information, I have decided to look to the stars for an economic outlook. Not seeing much in our earthly environment to look forward to, so I'm looking up instead.

I heard an astrologist on the radio the other day. She said she was able to predict the downturn in the stock market by reading astrological tables. But more interestingly, she said the low point for the stock market will hit in August 2009.

So, I'm taking that as good news — after all, Aries and Orion are likely to know as much about where we're going as anyone else, right? Especially now. And if they say the beginning of the end is in sight … well, who am I to question the universe?

I have been spending a little more time looking at the stars myself — not so much for guidance, but for a little peace and comfort. We got word earlier this month that our competitor trade magazines Design & Decor and Furniture Style have been closed.

These are simply awful times for the publishing business, and we mourn their loss — not just as friends, colleagues and competition, but as fellow journalists.

We need you more than ever to support us so we can continue to provide the voice this industry needs. Retailers, let us know what we are doing right/wrong/too much/not enough. And help us by letting your vendors know when you read their editorial coverage and see their ads. Visit our Web site — there are lots of stories exclusive to the Web, and all sorts of other helpful information, including show calendars, new products only published online, editorial invitations and top-notch blogs on retailing and design.

We know that a lot of you are stars in your own right, so I want to take the time (and real estate in this star-themed column) to remind you to nominate yourselves for our Retail Stars, published in May. The deadline is upon us, so let us know ASAP if you should be considered. You can e-mail me directly at jheinzen@reedbusiness.com.

So, am I grasping at straws with the whole astrology thing? Maybe … probably. But I'd rather reach for stars than the alternative.

What's coming in April

April Fool's, April showers, Income Tax Day, Passover, Easter, International Pooper-Scooper Week … what a month! April also owns National Sibling Day (10th), Take a Wild Guess Day (15th), and a new favorite, Blah, Blah, Blah Day (17th). And don't forget the High Point Market. Accordingly, the April HAT will be loaded up with a preview of product introductions for the show, including our Exclusive Sketchbooks and comprehensive New Products listings. We also look at the permanent botanicals business, the color blue, our 2010 color forecast and much more.
