The New York International Gift Fair is bringing back its "SustainAbility: design for a better world" program this summer, with a curated exhibit of sustainable products, a seminar featuring "Lazy Environmentalist" Josh Dorfman and a presentation on organic beauty trends.
The exhibit, curated by Ilene Shaw of Shaw + Co! Productions, will showcase global gift and home industry suppliers whose products or production processes are eco-friendly, as well as companies whose business practices are socially responsible, philanthropic or fair-trade oriented. Some 175 companies, representing a wide range of gift, jewelry and home categories are expected to be featured and a full participant list will be posted online at www.nyigf.com after June 30.
In addition to the exhibit, a two-part seminar program will provide background on green consumer behavior, and offer suggestions for integrating and marketing sustainable merchandise. Advance registration is available online at www.nyigf.com/programs.
Monday, Aug.17, “It’s Easy Being Green: A Conversation with Josh Dorfman, The Lazy Environmentalist” will be presented from noon-1:30 pm. Susan Szenasy, editor-in-chief of Metropolis Magazine, will interview the environmental entrepreneur and media personality as the two discuss easy and stylish ways to green a business.
Tuesday, Aug.18, Organic Beauty editor-in-chief/founding editor Rona Berg will present “Mainstream Green…New Directions in Organic Beauty” from noon-1:30 pm. Berg and a panel of retail and manufacturing experts will explore where consumers are getting their green product knowledge, what they are looking for and how they are using this information.
“NYIGF launched its sustainability program three years ago to recognize and encourage the integration of environmental responsibility with profitable business practices,” said Dorothy Belshaw, NYIGF director and GLM senior vice president. “The phenomenal response from both buyers and suppliers signals that our industry is ready, willing and able to support the green movement.”
NYIGF runs Aug. 15-20, at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Pier 94. For information and registration, visit www.nyigf.com.
