Bravado Home & Design
opened its 2,850-sq.-ft. showroom of high-end home furnishings in November 2007 in Portland's Pearl District. During their first year of operation, owners Bradley Clifford and Stefan Krupelak did $1.6 million in business. They are approaching the end of their second year with the knowledge their store has been named an ART Award finalist in the category of Rising Star Retailer.

Clifford describes Bravado as an interior design-based showroom, one that uses organic themes, natural lighting and neutral tones to create a warm, inviting environment that customers can understand and re-create in their own living spaces. Home accents occupy about half of the floor, generating about $385 per square foot and accounting for 20% of 2008 sales.

As consumers tighten their purse strings and spend more time shopping around for lower prices, Clifford said online search engines have become one of his biggest competitors. "We've learned not to price things on the floor with the vendor's description, so they'll be harder to find online."

Home accents occupy about half of the floor at Bravado, an interior design-based showroom that gets "redesigned" every five or six weeks.
Clifford and Krupelak shop the New York, Las Vegas and High Point markets, enjoy bringing in new things and like to spend as much time as possible working in their clients' homes. The designers also redesign Bravado's entire showroom every five or six weeks. "Customers like that our store stays fresh," Clifford said, "and we love it when people say they love the feel and colors of the showroom and want to make their home like this."

Prior to opening Bravado, Clifford owned Vertu, a high-end gift gallery in Dallas, where he grew sales from $230,000 to $1.3 million just a year after purchasing the shop. After a renovation opened up more floor space, he added furniture and began to build his interior design business. Eleven years later, he was ready for something different. Clifford liquidated Vertu and moved to Portland with his life partner John Oules, who introduced him to Krupelak.

Organic themes, natural lighting and neutral tones contribute to Bravado's warm, inviting environment.
Krupelak landed in the northwest corner of the United States in 1989, coming from the former Czechoslovakia with just $311 in his pocket — and no knowledge of the English language. He soon discovered television sitcoms and, after wondering why The Golden Girls were always laughing, bought a battery-operated dictionary to help translate the show that he began watching religiously. He worked from 1990–1996 as a fitness model, taught himself photography and eventually began freelancing.

During the summer of 2007, Clifford and Krupelak decided to go into business together. "Stefan is truly an amazing salesperson and designer," Clifford said. "He has the ability to really connect with the client and build a strong trusting relationship. We are all about creating settings that showcase how things can be used in the home, and we work personally with everyone who walks through the door. We strive to offer a service that is hard to find in this day and age."

Annual sales: $1.9 million (projected for 2009)
