Madison, Conn. — Kathy Walsh and Trip Rothschild opened their fourth Homeward Bound store, in Madison. The store carries furnishings, gifts and apparel with an emphasis on organic, sustainable and fairly traded goods. Homeward Bound stores are also located in Great Barrington, Mass., New Milford, Conn., and West Hartford, Conn. Walsh is a member of Home Accents Today's Retail Advisory Board.
Jamestown, N.C. — Furnitureland South celebrated the opening of its newly expanded and renovated Outlet Center in August. The 300,000-sq.-ft. center showcases more than 150 designed rooms of home furnishings, all available for sale off the floor.
Grand Haven, Mich. — Susan Westgate opened Panache Home at 218 Washington, offering accessories, furniture, tabletop, art, rugs, pillows, garden decor, gift items and design services.
Seattle — Masins Fine Furnishings & Interior Design announced plans to open its third Seattle area location, a 2,100-sq.-ft. store at the Bravern development in Bellevue that will carry decorative accessories, lamps, rugs and pillows. The family-owned retailer was founded in Seattle in 1927.
New York — Raymour & Flanigan signed a 10-year lease for its first store on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The Liverpool, N.Y.-based retailer will take 30,000 square feet on two levels at 1961 Broadway, a space formerly occupied by Circuit City. With the Broadway showroom, Raymour will have nine New York-area stores.
Camden, Maine — Jo Ellen Designs has moved to 22 Main St. in downtown Camden,?next to the Lord Camden Inn.
Monroe, Ohio — Riley's Furniture Gallery has opened a second Cincinnati-area store, in the Cincinnati Premium Outlets.
Hendersonville, N.C. — Diane Foley opened D'Ellie's Garden Center & What Nots, selling home decor items and gifts in addition to trees, shrubs and flowers, at 2594 Chimney Rock Rd.
New York — JC Penney opened a store on Herald Square in Manhattan near Macy's flagship. Although?the retailer maintained its corporate office in Manhattan from 1914 to 1988, the 153,000-sq.-ft. store is JC Penney's first in the borough. The company also operates stores in the Bronx, Staten Island and Queens.
Costa Mesa, Calif. — My Sparrow opened a retail location in July at the SEED People's Market in the Camp in Costa Mesa. The shop's merchandise includes eco-friendly and vintage home furnishings and accessories.
Louisville, Ky. — Rellek Home Furnishings opened at 817 E. Market St., selling new and consignment merchandise.
Destin, Fla. — A 1,600-sq.-ft. Swarovski boutique recently opened at Silver Sands Factory Stores, carrying jewelry, home accessories and collectibles.
Las Vegas — Ethan Allen is opening a 10,000-sq.-ft. design center at Las Vegas Design Center in September. The opening is timed to correspond with the Las Vegas Market but will remain open to designers and consumers year-round. Ethan Allen is also planning to open design centers in Dubai, China and Amman, Jordan this year.
Waynesboro, Va. — Grand Home Furnishings is opening a new store at 436 Tiffany Dr. The 40,000-sq.-ft. store combines a location that has operated in Staunton since 1961 and another that operated in downtown Waynesboro since 1965.
Los Angeles — Dot Box Media launched SecondShowroom.com, an online marketplace for home furnishings showroom samples, overstock and excess inventory. Users may list products and upload photos for free, but only retailers, showrooms and manufacturers are allowed to sell on the site.
Houston — Gallery Furniture's main store reopened following a May 21st fire that destroyed its 70,000-sq.-ft. warehouse and damaged the 100,000-sq.-ft. adjacent store. Portions of the showroom reopened in July, but the entire unveiling took place Sept. 3rd. The refurbished store includes an expanded youth furniture area; a playground; an area rug department called the Moroccan Rug Bazaar; and a new Inspirational Home area, a three-apartment complex built into the store and decorated by designer Bill Stubbs to illustrate three themes - traditional, Texas Hill Country and Urban Loft.
Boulder, Colo. — Boulder Furniture Arts' new owner Lee Nemerowicz reopened in a bigger location at 1200 Pearl Street. Lew Collins founded the store 25 years ago.
Pittsford, N.Y. — Following a recent change in ownership, Ambiance Home Furnishings & Gifts reopened in mid June. Also in Pittsford, Messner Carpeting is expanding its 4,400-sq.-ft. Monroe Ave. store by 1,100 square feet.
Fremont, Ohio — Re Create Interiors, owned by Shirley Whitaker, moved to a new 1,100 sq.-ft. location on Main Street. A ribbon cutting was hosted by the Sandusky County Chamber of Commerce.
Prince Frederick, Md. — Seascapes home accent and gift store has relocated to a larger space at 4105 7th St. in North Beach.
Miami — Online retailer nikkoshops.com launched a second online storefront called PadStyle Shop, focusing on modern furniture and contemporary home furnishings. Located at Shop.PadStyle.com, the store is a companion site to the PadStyle blog, an interior design and furniture blog founded in 2006 and acquired by Nikkoshops a year later. Nikkoshops, previously known as Prime Furniture Source, was founded in 2006 by Jessica Matthews and Nuno Andrade.
New York — SoHo home accessories retailer Areaware is operating a pop-up shop on the ground floor of New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal through Sept. 26. The project, called Design-to-Go, was organized by the Port Authority of N.Y. and N.J., the Fashion Center Business Improvement District and the Times Square Alliance to promote New York and New Jersey designers and artists.
New York — The Flatiron Gallery, a high-end home furnishings store run by Restoration Hardware, opens this month at 935 Broadway in the Flatiron district.
Northfield, Minn. — Steve and Suzy Taggart are opening Rooms by Tagg 2, stocking a variety of home accents and handmade wood furniture, in the Perman Building in downtown Northfield.
Kansas City, Mo. — Entrepreneur and traveler Roni Jaco has launched LoadedTrunk.com, a multi-cultural collection of art objects, textiles, artifacts, jewelry and rare finds for the home. "I grew up an Army brat and wherever we lived, my mother filled our home with the art, crafts and home furnishings that captured the essence of local culture," Jaco said. "I developed a lifelong appreciation for the feeling you get when you're in a room that reflects your life's experiences through the treasures you've gathered along the way."
