Dallas — Anteks Home Furnishings opened a new 8,000-sq.-ft. retail showroom in the Dallas Design District at 1135 Dragon St. Owner and 15-year home furnishings industry veteran Jason Lenox said the new store is more design-based "with a renewed focus on unique, one-of-a-kind pieces from around the country; we have things you won't find anywhere else, period." The eco-friendly space features antiques, heirlooms, collectibles, custom furniture and upholstery with western-rustic elements. The store, which continues to provide design services in its new location, is offering interior designers a 30% discount on in-stock items.
Astoria, Ore. — Roby's Furniture of Tillamook is opening a new store, its fifth, in a space formerly occupied by Hunt's Home Furnishings. The company also has locations in Florence, Lincoln City and Newport.
Tuscaloosa, Ala. — Home Accents, a Northport home decor store, is building a new 35,000-sq.-ft. store off McFarland Blvd. The new store will replace a Home Accents store that has been in operation for 20 years and for which the lease is about to expire. The store, which will open early next year, also has locations in Jasper and Pelham, and carries home decor, wicker, artificial flowers, dining accessories, party and seasonal decorations.
Ybor City, Fla. — Marcus O'Brikis opened Agora Ybor at 1515 E. Seventh Ave. The 2,400-sq.-ft. retail showroom carries furniture, pottery, textiles and accessories.
Pittsburgh — After turning a neighboring storefront into a design center, gift and accessories boutique, Penhollows has expanded its collection to include sofas, chairs, tables, rugs and lighting. The shop features new and vintage merchandise.
Islip, N.Y. — Houston-based outdoor furniture retailer The Chair King will team up with former Fortunoff executives and a family member to open six Fortunoff Backyard Stores on New York's Long Island and in New Jersey early next year. The Chair King has 18 stores in Texas.
Oahu, Hawaii — Sugarcane Boutique opened in Kaimuki, featuring furniture, home accents and apparel.
Barboursville, W.Va. — A 63,000-sq.-ft. Hobby Lobby opened in a location formerly occupied by Value City Department store. Pittsburgh — Furniture Today's Heath Combs reported that furniture retailer Today's Home is repositioning its Designer Furniture Outlet (DFO) store brand, closing two locations and opening a 15,000-sq.-ft. DFO store in the South Hills area next year. DFO offers one-of-a-kind, high-end, cash-and-carry items, factory closeouts and promotions at a low markup.
Houston — Haynes Furniture will enter two new states early next year with the opening of The Dump stores in Atlanta and Tempe, Ariz., and could open one more new store before 2010 is out, according to a story by Furniture Today's Clint Engel. The discount-oriented retailer will open in January in the former Costco Home store in Tempe and is leasing a warehouse nearby. In Atlanta, The Dump will open in a former Home Depot near I-285 and State Road 400 in February. In addition to five Haynes stores in Va. and N.C., Haynes operates The Dump locations in Hampton, Norfolk and Richmond; in the greater Philadelphia market, Houston and Dallas. The Dump is looking to expand in other markets and may open one more location next June or July.
Los Angeles — Christopher Guy is opening a new store at 9699 Wilshire Blvd. in Beverly Hills. In addition to showcasing Guy's collections, the 2,400-sq.-ft. space will have plasma screens for interactive viewing of the design team in action, encased within an upper design lounge for architectural and design professionals. Guy's latest collection includes a Silk Cut line that has expanded to dining tables and upholstery pieces, adorned with patented and signature Chris-X legs (chris-cross).
Culver City, Calif. — Room & Board is opening a store on Washington Blvd. in the former Helms Bakery, which closed in 1969. The Minneapolis-based retailer also has stores in Los Angeles and Orange County.
Louisville, Ky. — Merridian, which opened its first store in Shelbyville, Ky., has signed a deal to buy a 34,000-sq.-ft. building that was originally built for a now-closed Circuit City. The owners will use about 20,000 square feet for a new store and lease out the rest.
The Woodlands, Texas — Eminence, a fine furnishings retailer specializing in handcrafted furniture and imported art and antiques, opened in August next to Sur la Table in Market Street's north commons building. The store carries imported home furnishings from more than 30 different countries, provides custom-made furniture and offers in-home decorating assistance.
Northfield, Minn. — Steve and Suzy Taggart are opening Rooms by Tagg 2, a furniture and home decor store, at 314 Division St.
Grayslake, Ill. — Teri Hoppe and Kim Fickel opened Hearth and Hound at 456 Barron Blvd. in Grayslake. The store features home accents and pet gifts.
Asheville, N.C. — Four Corners Home reopened Mobilia after acquiring the business in June, according to a report by the Asheville Mountain Xpress. Four Corners, owned by Michael Forde and William Griffin, was started in 2002 as a home furnishing importer and e-commerce-based seller, before branching out to bricks and mortar stores. It now operates the two Four Corners stores and Mobilia - the latter in a former JCPenney store. Forde and Griffin remerchandised Mobilia for the reopening, keeping to its contemporary niche but adding a broader line of gifts and accessories, according to the report.
