October sales edge upward at home accent retailers TJX, Jo-Ann Stores, Ross, Kohl's, Costco

Massachusetts-based TJX Companies, Inc. today reported October 2009 sales were $1.7 billion, up 15% over the $1.5 billion achieved during the same month a year ago. For the 39 weeks ended Oct. 31, 2009, sales reached $14.3 billion, up 5% over the $13.6 billion achieved during the 39-week period last year. Comparable store sales for the month increased 10% compared to last October. For the 39-week, year-to-date period, consolidated comparable store sales increased 5% compared to last year.
President and CEO Carol Meyrowitz, said "We are particularly pleased with our 12% comp sales increase at The Marmaxx Group (the combination of T.J. Maxx and Marshalls), where customer traffic continued to drive sales throughout the month, boding well for the holiday season.”
The TJX Companies, Inc. operates 889 T.J. Maxx, 820 Marshalls, 324 HomeGoods, and 148 A.J. Wright stores in the United States. In Canada, the company operates 208 Winners, 79 HomeSense and 3 STYLESENSE stores, and in Europe, 262 T.K. Maxx and 14 HomeSense stores. The Marmaxx Group currently holds the number 18 spot on Home Accents Today's list of the top 50 Home Accent Retailers (by sales volume).
At no. 44-ranked Jo-Ann Stores, net sales for the third quarter ended Oct. 31, 2009 increased 6% to $509.1 million from $480.1 million for the same period last year. Same-store sales increased 4.3% compared with a 1.5% same-store sales decrease for the third quarter last year. Traffic increased 4.9% while average ticket declined 0.6%.
Compared to the same month a year ago, October sales at stores open at least one year also rose at Home Accents Today top 50 retailers Ross Stores (up 9%), Kohl's (up 1.4%), and Costco (up 5%).
