Dorothy Belshaw, director of the New York International Gift Fair and senior vice president of GLM, a DMG world media business, unveiled “Focus Forward NYIGF 2013,” a three-year strategic reorganization plan for the NYIGF. The timing of the plan coincides with the completion of construction of the new Javits North expansion and the start of the three-year renovation of Javits Center, including improved building systems and the installation of a new green roof, which will earn the Center a LEED Silver certification.
Looking ahead to 2013, the Fair will be reorganized into four divisions: Home, Lifestyle, Handmade and New York’s Newest. These newly created divisions provide an expanded and better defined alignment of resources, as well a better cross-marketing opportunities.
“By improving category adjacencies, refining existing offerings and introducing new in-demand product categories, NYIGF will offer comprehensive and trend-forward product collections for home lifestyle and gift in a clear, navigable and energized layout,” stated Dorothy Belshaw.
Home, encompassing furnishings, textiles, tabletop and gourmet housewares, decorative accessories and Accent on Design, will be located on Javits Level 3. Lifestyle, encompassing Baby & Child — a new focused section, personal care and wellness, gift and stationery and personal accessories, will be located on Javits Level 1. Handmade will be repositioned and reconfigured into two product, Designer/Maker and Global Resources, with Designer/Maker being housed in the new Javits North and Handmade Global Resources to be located in the Galleria on Javits Level 4. New York’s Newest will be re-introduced to the show as the fourth division and located at Pier 94.
The reorganization will be accomplished in stages aligned with the Javits renovation. Phase 1 of the restructuring will begin with the August 2010 NYIGF. The new Javits North expansion will be complete, providing a 40,000 sq. ft. column-free exhibit space with natural lighting. The Handmade: Designer/Maker section, which includes many of the vendors who exhibit in the Level 4 Galleria, will debut in Javits North. Handmade: Global Resources will be located in Hall 1D, and then move to the Level 4 Galleria in 2011.
The new Baby & Child section within the Lifestyle division will be located in Hall 1E. It will be comprised of a juried collection of upscale, well designed, sophisticated and purpose-driven products for babies and children up to 10 years old and their families. And New York’s Newest, showcasing exhibitors new to the New York market, will return to Pier 92.
At the same time, exhibitors who normally occupy aisles 2000–2400 will be relocated to accommodate a roof construction work zone. The work zone will be shielded from the rest of the hall and protected cross-aisles will allow attendees to navigate from one side of the work zone to visit exhibits on the other side.
Other phases will be outlined as the work progresses. The NYIGF is set for August 14–19 at New York’s Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Piers 92 and 94.
