HPMA says attendance down; buyers positive; market met budget
April 30, 2009
An article in today's High Point Enterprise reports that despite fewer attendees at this week's Market, the High Point Market Authority will close its fiscal year June 30th above budget projections by $153,000, partly due to reduced spending for transportation, guest and other services brought on by state budget cuts this year.
Reporter Karen Underwood writes that in a meeting yesterday, April 29, the board of directors of the High Point Market Authority said the number of attendees this week was "significantly less this market than in the past." Board chairman Kevin O'Connor buoyed the comment with the observation that even though numbers were down due to the recession, "the most significant players in the industry" were in town this week and buyers remained positive.
Next year, however, the High Point Market Authority may have to trim more than $700,000 out of its budget because of cuts in state funding. For more details, see Larry Thomas' story in Furniture/Today here.
