Designer, Not Stylist

January 9, 2009

Don’t you just love product designers who actually problem-solve and not just style things? (Not that there’s anything wrong with that, per se.) Christian Schoeneman is one of those designers. I found him on Dwell Connect recently and I think he has a great eye, with an amazing ability to pull sophisticated forms out of  ¾ inch plywood. (A product that more often than not lends itself to horrible, horrible things when used to make furniture.) And we can all take a lesson from his pattern-making skill: many of his pieces are made from single sheets of plywood, which has to mean very little waste. (Hell, I can chew up a whole sheet of plywood just getting the buzzsaw started.) So far as I can tell Schoeneman and his company Plan Canvas only sell (very inexpensive) plans for his furniture designs and not the finished pieces. Maybe he’ll branch out into product in the future – surely this is how Blu Dot got started.

Ciao!

Christian is a personal friend of mine, he is a great designer and what makes his designs great is that he actually gets out and builds and works on things so there is more to it that just looking pretty, it also has to be functional.
