Blister Packs Are The Scourge of Modern Retailing
March 18, 2009

Can we talk about the scourge of modern retailing for a minute? The blister pack.
Last weekend I bought these cool little LED under-counter lights at IKEA. When I got around to figuring out how to install them, I realized there is absolutely no way a human being could open this package with his hands alone. This is heat-sealed, hard plastic. You could gnaw on it all day with your teeth and never be any closer to lighting up the dim recesses of your countertops.
I did manage to open it with my handy-dandy Kobalt utility knife (so pretty) and still nearly cut myself on the sharp plastic. I wonder how many “retail customers” visit the emergency room every year after unsuccessfully trying to put new batteries in a flashlight, or even trying to get the flashlight out of its package?
So, why do manufacturers continue to create packages no one can open, and maybe more important, why do we keep buying them?
Rant, over.
