Greensboro's Proximity Hotel is Green and Chic
March 11, 2009

I had a tasty lunch and inspiring tour of the Proximity Hotel in Greensboro, NC today. The Proximity is the nation’s only Platinum LEED certified hotel. Opened in late 2007 by Quaintance-Weaver Restaurants and Hotels, a Greensboro company, the Proximity received the Platinum designation from the U.S. Green Building Council in October 2008. It isn’t easy to obtain the distinction earned by the Proximity. Points are awarded in six categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy & atmosphere, material & resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation in design. Certification is based on total points per category and available in four levels: Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Picture the complexity and scale of a commercial project like a hotel and you see the amazing amount of design and determination that went in to the Proximity. (It must have been great fun to be on the Quaintance-Weaver design team though I suspect they got very little sleep.) Did I mention that it’s beautiful? It is. More on that next time.
