Obama, Clinton or McCain? Which candidate would you prefer as a White House client & what would you do?
March 5, 2008
I asked our design panelists to imagine: it's 3 a.m. on Jan. 21, 2009, the phone rings, and the call is from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The new president is inviting you to oversee a redecoration of the White House, including a complete makeover of the First Family’s private living quarters. Political preferences aside, which candidate would you most like to have as a client, and what would you do? Their responses appear here, and in our March 2008 issue. --Susan Dickenson
Doug Wilson -- Why can’t our “royal” families have a little fun and put true personality into the digs that they’ll inhabit for four to eight years? Hillary Clinton was in charge of her domain during the Bill years, but now just might be the time to Billify the private quarters for the Hillary years. I think that Bill and I would need to make the digs as comfortable as possible since Hillary will undoubtedly have the Secret Service install double-bolted locks on all entry/exit doors to keep Bill out of her Oval Office. I’m seeing lots of La-Z-Boy loungers, foot rests and overstuffed sofas so that Bill can be comfortable – locked away. The kitchen will need a newly installed doughnut machine since the risk of a Krispy Krème delivery could aid in an escape coup. To keep Bill from going too stir crazy, we’ll have to fabricate a soundproof room to keep the saxophone wailing from trickling down to cabinet meetings and the like."
