Retail Stories - Sandra Espinet

June 11, 2008

The last time you shopped for home décor item(s) for your home, what did you buy? Where did you buy it? And what attracted you to that particular shop?

Sandra Espinet: The hardest job I have worked on is my own home. I joked with my husband that I needed to hire an interior designer in order to finish the house. My tastes are ever changing and eclectic but clean, not cluttered. I mix contemporary furniture with unique found antique accessories or items purchased on travels. They range from Bhutanese Buddhist scripts to French architectural pieces converted into mirror frames and mid century silver lamps with custom shades. Blackman Cruz and Fat Chance in Los Angeles are among my favorite stops for found objects.

I love dishes and have several sets that vary in color and style. I mix and match them according to the occasion. I found a light celadon ceramic design in Thailand that is so unique. And I have an antique blue and white Chinoiserie pattern that I purchased in Palm Beach years ago. I just had a custom Mexican Talavera set designed in San Miguel de Allende. But my favorite is a simple ceramic French blue set I found walking around in Provence, France, that mixes well with all of the others.

Bed linens are quite important in my design and I am always trying new sheets out before recommending them to clients. Anichini and Sferra Bros. are two of my current favorites. My new duvet and shams are being custom hand- embroidered in India by Flying Fig and I can't wait to get them. I consider my home a work in progress and next month when I return from Morocco and Portugal I am sure there will be a few additions!
