When the boss was away, the staff trimmed pay... and a few other items

July 22, 2009

"We all know that things are slow. I was away on a shopping trip recently and my staff of 12 had a meeting. They’ve seen a lot of designers and builders going under and have therefore become a little nervous about job security. So they decided to get together to talk about ways they could save money for our design firm. I came back two weeks later to find out everyone had not only taken a voluntary 5% paycut, but they also:

+got a big water cooler and have stopped buying bottled water (saves $80/month)

+stopped buying the “good” coffee creamer and now buy powdered cream (saves $120 per month),

+turn off their computers and lights in rooms not being used (saves $200 per month),

+cut back on long distance calls to international vendors and started emailing them instead (saves $400 dollars a month),

+started recycling used printer paper,

+consolidated our driving errands (saved $400 in gas),

+and they even started car pooling since several of them live in the same neighborhood!

Fortunately, our little design firm is very blessed and we are in great shape with several new projects in the works. No one was ever in danger of losing their job, but it just shows how people can come together and make a positive difference."

Sandra Espinet, interior designer/owner of Square One Interiors and Gallery in San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico (and long-time member of Home Accents Today's designer insight panel) recently debuted her first home product -- an elegantly packaged candle lightly scented with orchid and gardenia.

"One common mistake my clients often make is choosing scents that overwhelm their home or don't reflect the interior design. My goal was to infuse a candle with the lightest and most natural scent possible to make it a universally pleasing addition to any home."

That shows tremendous loyalty and incentive on their part , but is also a reflection on the kind of boss you must be. It is nice to hear about people appreciating something good for a change.

Usually, after a meeting the staff are asked "Any ideas or questions?" which if truly considered or taped can be injected into the company's mainstream project. Good going Square One staff. Flora

ANY company or businesses employees that do not take care of the businesses future and growth , the direction of the company and its performance , need not be a part of the business or the company , they are not supposed to only work when the boss is watching , or in their midst , Square one will in the long run be a long term company , that gives opportunity to the younger employees as the older ones begin in 19 years to be semi - retired .
Best of luck , and savings and cost cutting should not only be an objective in hard times . neil desmond E.
