Summer Inspiration - Paul Thompson

July 12, 2008

Describe your idea or memory of the perfect summer place. Has anything about that special place in time provided inspiration for your work?

When I first moved to New York, I was traveling out to East Hampton to enjoy lots of dinner parties and good food as the NYC social scene moved east for the summer. Many times I’d go out to houses early in the season to redecorate for my friends. I learned as much about people and human nature those summers as I did about interior spaces. Years later when I was independently consulting with retailers, I was well prepared, to say the least.

For almost five years following the Hampton summers, I went to the beaches off of Sayville and Bellport. Almost every weekend during these summer months and specifically my vacation week following Labor Day, when the beaches were almost empty and the weather was still perfect, I would spend time reading, thinking and writing.  The warm sun, cool breeze and the sound of the surf are meditative and inspired countless notes about trends, product development ideas and designs most specifically for tabletop.

My favorite winter vacation destinations tend to be warm weather with beautiful beaches to snorkel and body surf. From the South of France to Greece, Mexico and most recently Tobago, located off the coast of Trinidad; these wonderful and warm locals, near or far, are special and make inspiration easier. --Paul Thompson
